Snowboard USA (SUSA) is a great opportunity for students who wish to combine quality education with adventure and competitive and non-competitive snowboarding. As with our other academic programs, a hands-on approach to learning is the focus.
Snowboard USA Commonly Asked Questions
The Learning With a low student-to-teacher ratio, each student receives individual attention. Academic instructors facilitate learning in traditional and non-traditional environments. Students attend classes with the California Academy students. Classes are interactive, rather than based only on lectures, which involves and challenges each student, allowing for a three dimensional learning process. Snowboarding and social activities are conditional upon the student's ability to stay on task with their academics, follow the SUSA code of conduct and maintain a positive attitude. Ready to Become a Better Snowboarder? Regardless of ability, students have the opportunity to quickly develop their snowboarding skills with the guidance of our coaches. The pride and excitement that students feel while improving their snowboarding skills transfer to their academic motivation and success. Over the past eleven years, beginning snowboarders have joined our competitive team and placed in competitions- even in the State Finals!
The Competitive Snowboarding During the snowboard season, the students snowboard three days per week. The coach works with each student to further develop skills in downhill and freestyle. Mt Shasta Board and Ski Park is located just over an hour from our campus and is used as the primary training hill. Our team competes with high schools in the California/Nevada Interscholastic Ski and Snowboarding Federation.(CNISSF). In addition, the team may enter competitions throughout Northern California and Oregon. Recreational Snowboarding Some students who are passionate about snowboarding prefer to improve their freestyle skills and not compete. Students who are in the SUSA Recreational group may ride a minimum of one day each week during the snowboard season. A snowboard instructor is available to work on skills development with the students. Activities Offered During the fall and late spring, SUSA focuses on other board sport activities such as skateboarding and physically preparing for the snowboard season. Students also have the ability to participate in the many activities offered on campus. Such activities may include the half-pipe, paintball, basketball, music, arts and crafts, fly fishing, or playing a game of pool or chess. Off-campus activities may include rockclimbing, hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing, backcountry snowboarding, avalanche awareness and rescue, river boarding, and many others. Our Location SUSA is located at the Nawa Academy campus northwest of Redding in Northern California. The campus sits in the foothills of the Trinity Alps and has full living and classroom accommodations. A computer lab with Internet access and a science lab are available to students throughout the year.
